Emerging from my service in the National Security Agency, I became a working artist in 1968 and have made my living solely through my art and writing ever since.

Following a profound experience while working in Ethiopia, surrounded by the most peaceful people I had ever met, and a landscape torn by centuries of conflict I began my life-long study of war and peace.

Today I am active with Bay Area Artists and Musicians for Peace, Vets for Peace, United for Peace & Justice (as an artist), Code PInk (as a videographer and artist) and the Campaign for the establishment of a U.S. Department of Peace & Non-Violence (as a fund-raiser). I have also spoken at the Commonwealth Club (SF) as part of a panel of five Artists for Peace (2008).

I have developed three "types" of Peace Art: covert, overt and anti-war art. Each has a different function within our society - and within the International Community. My work is, on one end, shown in Fine Art galleries and in exhibitions; and, on the other end, used as posters, t-shirts and greeting cards.

All work seen here is available for purchase or use with permission. The size of individual prints is up to you - they are available in sizes from 5x7 inches up to 24x36 inches, as giclée prints. The three original paintings I have at the moment are 3x5 feet.

The three pieces available as original acrylic on canvas are considered to be "covert" Peace Art. That is to say that they are visually attractive, with bright colours and enticing symbols and subjects. But they are, in my opinion, "deceptive", as their attractiveness brings the viewer closer to the art in the same way that a spider would "attract" a fly. That is to say, once the viewer comes in for a closer look, the symbols in the paintings (the London bombings of 7/7 and the death of Marla Ruzicka, peace activist) become available to the viewer. The artist's intended impact is accomplished on one of several levels: attractiveness on a surface level, intellectual engagement, and emotional involvement. Any level will do, the viewer always returns to these images one way or another.
